Welcome to India Basin Waterfront Park

The India Basin Waterfront Park Project is a partnership between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, A. Philip Randolph Institute, Trust for Public Land, San Francisco Foundation, and the Bayview-Hunters Point community.

The project is environmental justice in action and aims to build a park that is both spectacular and crucial to the health of San Francisco’s southeast communities with an emphasis on public access, social equity, waterfront recreation, resiliency to sea level rise, and habitat and wetland restoration and enhancement.

The project plan combines the existing India Basin Shoreline Park area and the recently opened park at 900 Innes into India Basin Waterfront Park, one grand 10-acre waterfront park. The final portion of the project that will renovate India Basin Shoreline Park is anticipated to begin in mid-2025.

India Basin Waterfront Park is one of only a few parks in the nation to be guided by an Equitable Development Plan (EDP) developed by the community. The EDP ensures the park’s features and programming are culturally relevant and directly benefits the Bayview-Hunters Point community. EDP initiatives that are currently being implemented include Bayview Safety Swim and Splash and Rocking the Boat youth programs, the Food Pavilion’s rotating vendor and workshop programming supporting workforce and business development; Artist in Residence programming at the park supporting Arts, Culture and Identity, and more.

Mayor Lurie Breaks Ground on Final Phase of India Basin Waterfront Park

Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Shamann Walton, and other city, state, and federal officials, and members of the Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) community yesterday broke ground on a project to unite two waterfront spaces

Led by Rec and Park in partnership with the A. Philip Randolph Institute, Trust for Public Land, the San Francisco Foundation and BVHP community, the project will connect the existing India Basin Shoreline Park area with the recently built park at 900 Innes Avenue, while regrading steep slopes for accessibility and restoring the shoreline habitat.

The project will renovate the existing 7.5-acre India Basin Shoreline Park, built in the 1990s, to improve accessibility, restore habitats, and bring an array of new features to the community, including a great lawn leading to a gravel beach; new boathouse, pier, and dock; a renovated playground for all ages with adult fitness stations; two basketball courts with stadium seating; and more. Construction begins this month and is expected to be complete in 2028.

The India Basin Waterfront Park project is guided by a nationally recognized Equitable Development Plan (EDP), created by and for the BVHP community. The plan ensures the park’s design, programming, and economic opportunities reflect the neighborhood’s culture and needs. A progress report released at the groundbreaking details ongoing work on the EDP’s initiatives.

"Finders Keepers" Community Day at India Basin Waterfront Park September 6

The San Francisco Arts Commission and Rec and Park announced last month the successful culmination of a yearlong Artist-in-Residence Program at India Basin Waterfront Park.

Local artists Afatasi the Artist and Conni McKenzie spent the past year embedded in the park's transformation, gathering stories, building community, and creating original works that reflect the culture, history, and everyday life of the Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) neighborhood.

Afatasi the Artist will unveil her project at an event on Saturday, September 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. "Finders Keepers" is an interactive experience inviting BVHP residents to rediscover India Basin Waterfront Park (900 Innes Avenue) and the surrounding neighborhood in fresh, meaningful ways. It will start at Shipwright's Cottage in the park, with an artist talk at the neighboring Box Shop (951 Hudson Avenue). The event will also feature local food, music, a scavenger hunt for hand-welded sculptures, and a live welding demo by the artist. Additional activities include jump houses, free haircuts, and community rowing with Rocking the Boat.

Finders Keepers seeks to reclaim public space for creativity and community and pays tribute to Bayview’s legacy of skilled makers and artisans—especially Black women welders who worked in the shipyards during WWII. For more information, click the link below. For more information, click this link.
