Welcome to India Basin Waterfront Park
The India Basin Waterfront Park Project is a partnership between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, A. Philip Randolph Institute, Trust for Public Land, San Francisco Foundation, and the Bayview-Hunters Point community.
The project is environmental justice in action and aims to build a park that is both spectacular and crucial to the health of San Francisco’s southeast communities with an emphasis on public access, social equity, waterfront recreation, resiliency to sea level rise, and habitat and wetland restoration and enhancement.
The project plan combines the existing India Basin Shoreline Park area and the recently opened park at 900 Innes into India Basin Waterfront Park, one grand 10-acre waterfront park. The final portion of the project that will renovate India Basin Shoreline Park is anticipated to begin in mid-2025.
India Basin Waterfront Park is one of only a few parks in the nation to be guided by an Equitable Development Plan (EDP) developed by the community. The EDP ensures the park’s features and programming are culturally relevant and directly benefits the Bayview-Hunters Point community. EDP initiatives that are currently being implemented include Bayview Safety Swim and Splash and Rocking the Boat youth programs, the Food Pavilion’s rotating vendor and workshop programming supporting workforce and business development; Artist in Residence programming at the park supporting Arts, Culture and Identity, and more.

Share your Thoughts - A Gift of Public Art for Bayview–Hunters Point
The Sijbrandij Foundation, in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco, is proud to announce a transformative public art initiative aimed at enhancing the cultural landscape of Bayview–Hunters Point. This initiative is a cultural gift to San Francisco, bringing large-scale, inspiring public sculptures to neighborhoods across the city at no cost to the public.
Your input is crucial in shaping the future of public art in Bayview–Hunters Point. Please take a moment to complete this survey and share your thoughts. Feedback includes potential locations, types of art that would feel meaningful, and what matters most in your neighborhood. Your involvement will help create a vibrant and inspiring public art experience for everyone.
You can also complete the survey in person at the Shipwrights Cottage (900 Innes Avenue) at the park.
About the Initiative
The project will introduce up to 100 temporary large-scale sculptures over three years, fully funded by the Sijbrandij Foundation. This initiative supports living artists, local communities, and aims to create a more vibrant city. Five works are already placed, with more commitments underway. Each piece is designed to inspire joy, connection, and creativity in public life.
The Sijbrandij Foundation is working closely with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and other city agencies to identify suitable locations for these pieces. They seek input and curatorial guidance from neighborhoods, artists, and partners to ensure that the art reflects the local identity and experience. Ongoing community engagement is core to their approach, and they are actively exploring site options in India Basin.
Why Bayview–Hunters Point?
Bayview–Hunters Point is a priority for early placements of these sculptures. The foundation is reviewing existing artworks that could be meaningful to the community and is seeking community partners to help guide this process.
